In the middle of a fashion shoot on a bitterly cold January evening my phone rang. The enquiry was from Riya, 8 year old Amani’s mum who had come across some portraits I shot late last year on a fantasy flower-fairy theme. I had never featured a child in my style portraits before so when she broached the possibility of using a similar theme for Amani’s ‘princess look’ I felt intrigued. Having shot so many style shoots over the last 18 months, these days, when booked for such a shoot, I am already prepared! However, the winter landscape poses a potentially impossible challenge to find that ideal location which would fit in effortlessly with the chosen theme. After several walks covering every nook and cranny within Cardiff’s Bute Park, I found it!
On the day of the shoot, the weather gods smiled down upon us and for January, it was so mild. Our spot was popular with squirrels and the odd energetic pooch straying from their owner designated flightpath, although none of these elements have crept in the photographs. Amani is no stranger to photoshoots having been featured as ‘A Little Princess’ by Asiana.tv when she was seven. In between the showering of petals by her mum to create the styled look as well as some standard portraits, the aim was to capture some of that charm and innocence associated with being a fairytale princess. I shall let my readers be the judge of whether we succeeded!
